Setsubun marks the beginning of spring in Japan.
On this day, a traditional ritual called “Mamemaki” is performed, in which roasted soybeans are thrown to drive away demons and evil spirits.

It is also customary to eat ehōmaki (a sushi roll wrapped in seaweed). While eating, people face the year’s lucky direction (which changes every year) and finish the entire roll in one go without speaking. It is believed that doing so will bring good fortune throughout the year.

Demons out, good fortune in!
“Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!”
鬼は外 (Oni wa soto) 福は内 (Fuku wa uchi)
“May evil spirits go out, and good fortune come in.”
