Setsubun marks the beginning of spring in Japan.
On this day, a traditional ritual called โ€œMamemakiโ€ is performed, in which roasted soybeans are thrown to drive away demons and evil spirits.

It is also customary to eat ehลmaki (a sushi roll wrapped in seaweed). While eating, people face the yearโ€™s lucky direction (which changes every year) and finish the entire roll in one go without speaking. It is believed that doing so will bring good fortune throughout the year.

Demons out, good fortune in!
